Mega-Regions and High-Speed Rail
I’m all for connecting D.C. more with New York, Philly, and Boston. Baltimore, honey, you’re already close enough. I just wish this would happen in my lifetime.
I was in Daegu — a city roughly the size of Washington, and similarly situated roughly four hours south of Korea’s NYC, Seoul — when South Korea’s bullet trains (KTX) came online. It was crazy suddenly being able to meet friends after work for dinner in Seoul — friends who a month before had lived four hours away.
That said, one of the reasons Amtrak sucks is because freight trains have priority on so many tracks. And as sexy as bullet trains and evening cocktails in Manhattan might sound, I hope improvements to the freight system are part of the plan as well.
