Warning! Geeky bike safety video on dooring when a bicyclist in a bike lane hits or is hit by the door of a parked car. This is the reason why I generally stray into the car lane even when a bike lane is available. I use the bike lane if there’s a lot of car traffic and I don’t want to impede their flow, but if I use the bike lane along parked cars, I can’t realistically go normal speed because I’m on the lookout for sudden doors.

This is also the reason why contraflow cycletracks on one-way streets are such a good idea; visibility for doorer and dooree is highly improved and the parked cars physical separate cyclists from vehicular traffic. A better bicycling experience for people who normally just dance with cars, a palatable bike experience for those who wouldn’t ride on the street, and less bikes slowing down vehicular traffic — win/win/win.

Had I done this video, there would have been long geeky buildup to a dramatic reenactment and it would be set to that Top Gun Danger Zone song.
