And there was much rejoicing (amongst transit geeks).
D.C. is finally laying down tracks for its streetcars. That’s a first if you don’t count the rails that are still there embedded in the cobblestone streets of Georgetown from the last century’s streetcar network, which was dismantled to make more room for cars. (Oh, what a wishy-washy bunch we are.)
But don’t hold your breath. They are putting down rail now so they don’t have to tear up the streets again later. The ETA for streetcars is still 2012 and still pending a solution for the prohibition on overhead wires. Arlington has a streetcar line in production as well, but that theirs stumbled on the recession, and may not be a contender for “first in region” anymore.
