Via Wikipedia is a public domain (old) map of “Alexandria County” circa 1878 (before the separation of the City of Alexandria and modern-day Arlington County). Fun!
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (yes, the C&O Canal) runs a route analogous to modern-day GW Parkway,
the Washington and Ohio Railroad is long gone but in its place today is the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (the only geography I recognize),
Rosslyn and Alexandria are apparently as old as dirt, Ballston used to be “Balls X Roads”,
the current county’s eponym (herein styled “U.S. Military Cemetery”) used to be smaller, and
the river bank is totally different.
But not so useful for choosing a new place to live.
